EVENTS and ACTIVITIES

York is the City of Festivals.  There is always something going on and a great buzz about the place. Across Yorkshire, towns and villages put on events to involve everyone and welcome visitors.

In York, examples include the Viking Festival over the February half term, the Food and Drink Festival in Spring and Autumn, and Illuminating York as we move into darker nights at the end of October.

We also have theatre, ghost walks, regattas, racing and many more ways to keep you busy and our street theatre is excellent but incidental!  Just that could keep you entertained all day.

Everyone loves York Maze, located on the road out to Elvington. This attraction provides fun for all the family.

So whether you're interested in chocolate, trains, dungeons, shopping or sport, there's something here for everyone.

ART and LITERATURE

Art is all around us - street art is a speciality. There are several galleries and much on the walls of our wonderful buildings - Fairfax House, Goddards, Treasurers House. Beningbrough Hall near York has a branch of the National Portrait Gallery.

York Art Gallery in Exhibition Square re-opened this year as the national centre for ceramics after major refurbishment and is well worth a visit.

We have several theatres in York including York Theatre RoyalThe Grand Opera House and the smaller Friargate Theatre.

Music is abundant whether it is in the Minster, at the University, at one of our Theatres, at the National Centre for Early Music or in one of the many smaller venues.
