Hockney himself first experienced the East Yorkshire countryside by bike. Cycling through Millington Dale, he felt the undulations and enjoyed the big skies of the area that he would later come to paint. As you take in the panoramic views for yourself, you will soon recognise the inspiration for pictures such as Garrowby Hill, Woldgate Woods and Bigger Trees at Warter.
Starting in Bridlington, the home of Hockney’s current studio, ‘Hockney’s Bigger Ride’ takes you on a four-night cycle trip through Woldgate, Sledmere, Thixendale, Millington Dale, Warter and into York. Art lovers can trace Hockney’s inspirational journey through the area, gaining a real sense of the space, changing light, and stunning scenery around them.
Our prices include full luggage transfer and good quality bed and breakfast accommodation. All our accommodation is fully checked and we know how important it is to get a good night's sleep after a day in the saddle.
Some of our customers choose to add an extra night in York to enjoy York itself before returning home. You can do this at the end or take a day in York before venturing off to Salts Mill on your final day. We are flexible - let us adapt the holiday to suit you.

5 days, 4 nights - £495 per person
Day one. Arrive in Bridlington in good time. Get fitted with your bikes and get to know Bridlington where Hockney currently has a studio. Our directions will lead you to scenes he has painted here. Some of these paintings have been done on an iphone. We will give you the opportunity to try the package he uses. You could try to recreate his view of the promenade (though we hope for you it is not a "rainy night")! Find some good food and may your way to your accommodation for a good nights rest.
Day two. Get into the cycling with about 32 miles to do today. The route will take you through woldgate area towards Sledmere. We will provide you with copies of some of the paintings Hockney has painted and tell you where to find some of the elements he has put in them
Day three. Today you will see how Hockney brings his experiences together to create a painting that captures the essence of a place. The effect is a painting from which we can recognise the place but there is much more to it than any one view we see. You will cover 34 miles today unless you choose our shorter option. It will take you through one of the most beautiful dales on a gentle slope that makes your pedals temporarily redundant.
Day four. You will wake up on day four in the area where Hockney first experienced the wolds and where he first rode a bike and felt the gentle undulations. Over a distance of 30 miles you will yourself experience Millington Dale and seek out the Bigger Trees that he painted at Warter before a final ride into York.
Day five. This is your opportunity to leave the bicycle behind and take a rail trip to Salt's Mill where several of Hockney's paintings are on permanent exhibition. Then it is back to York to catch your train home.
